So, you're going to have to bear with me. Posting for this next week is going to be a bit irratic. Sometimes I'll post twice a day, sometimes not at all.
As some of you know, or anybody who has read this week, I'll be flying to New Orleans on Friday for the night. I'm really excited. I get to see my wonderful girlfriend, meet some of her teammates, visit the wonderful city of New Orleans, leave the Northwest Suburbs... Dang, I'm super excited.
But, with all acts of spotanaity there is a lot to prepare for. I have about ten million errands to run before I leave, plus I work and such. Yay!
Anyways, last night I spent the evening with a dear friend (who is an enemy because he can cook like a madman) to watch "The Incredibles." I fell asleep during one of my favorite movies. So, I opted on having a much healthier night of sleep instead of posting. I'm sure it'll happen again. I probably won't post Friday night. That all depends on the hotel situation. I'll bring my computer just in case.
---
Today while I was visiting some friends. I love my friends. They lte me know that I look thinner in my face and in my belly. That was nice to hear. Thank you.

Now I Really Need To Watch What I Eat
HOLY FREAKING CRAP!
---
I am so freaking excited. Listen readers, you have no idea how pumped I am right now. I'm so pumped, I actually said pumped.
Let me explain.
Today, I really got to missing the most beautiful girl that has ever walked this earth (You can be number two. Sorry, but she is just that damn beautiful). I was also thinking about the new Pixar movie "Up" and how freaking good it looks. Then I was thinking how great it would be to watch "Up" with Stephanie.
So, I am.
I booked a flight and booked a hotel room and I'm going to see "Up" in New Orleans.
---
I'm mostly excited to see Stephanie. In fact, I would never watch another movie ever again if I had to choose between her and a movie. In fact, I would give up just about anything if I had to make the choice.
She is simply amazing, and well, I miss her.
---
DIET:
BREAKFAST - Tommy Snacks
SNACK 1 - Soy Chai Latte
SNACK 2 - 1/4 of a lemon bar
SNACK 3 - Coffee
DINNER - Chicken Wrap, Chicken Sandwich (No Mayo)
DESSERT - Grilled BBQ Chicken
EXERCISE:
- Running around like crazy at work, sweating like a madman.
- Shaking from drinking too much coffee.
- Jumping up and down from excitement.
- Smiling from ear to ear
- Pacing while talking to Stephanie
BIRD ATTACK COUNT: 16 (I'm loosing track).
DAYS-WITHOUT-SODA-POP-O-METER: 14 (Two whole weeks!)
WATER GAUGE: approx. 60 oz. (Not bad?)

I Almost Forgot Today
I literally almost forgot today happened. It was a perfectly fine day, it wasn't too exciting, it wasn't too boring. All I did was sit at a coffee shop and surf the web. Of course, it was intentional web surfing. I was researching how to blog better, fitness, colleges to transfer to, that kind of thing.
On top of doing all of that, I also finished the book "Coraline" by Neil Gaiman. You should all probably read it right now.
Also, I caught up with three great friends!
So, I guess it wasn't a boring day, or really all that forgettable. It just was a day.
---
YAY! I have 99 fans on facebook. If you read this blog and are not a fan. Go be the 100th!
---
Tomorrow, I have the house to myself and no plans. So, I'm making plans.
SATURDAY'S TO-DO LIST
- Write a letter
- Play the piano
- Clean my bathroom
- Clean my car
- Take a long bike ride
- Have a one-day vegetarian diet
- Read a book
---
DIET:
BREAKFAST - Fiber One Bar, homemade Tommy Snacks
SNACK 1 - Blended Chai Latte
SNACK 2 - Two grilled chicken wraps (to-go) from Wendy's... I should've requested to not have the thousand island dressing, but since I paid in nickles, dimes, and pennies, I thought I shouldn't be more rude.
SNACK 3 - Three Tootsie Rolls, a bag of popcorn, unsalted
SNACK 3 - Two pieces of pizza (One was a corner and tiny, the other was delicious)
EXERCISE:
3 sets of:
10 crunches
3 leglifts
5 push-ups
DAYS-WITHOUT-SODA-POP-O-METER: 11 (I have no cravings for the stuff!)
WATER GAUGE: approx. 60 oz.

Dashed Dreams and Hopes.
Today was a sad day. Some days you just have bummer days. Today was one of them. I don't plan on writing much.
I think there is a tie for what made it a bad day.
The tie is between:
1) a coworker said she'd bring me a slice of lemon meringue pie. She never showed.
2) I got attacked by a bird... three times. I'm starting to get real pissed at red winged black birds. I learned that they were not red breasted but red winged. Either way...
BIRD COUNT: 9 Attacks.
---
DIET:
BREAKFAST - low fat yogurt and Kashi, with fresh strawberries and a bananananananananana
SNACK 1 - Homemade Tommy Snacks
SNACK 2 - Peaches and Cream (with some bananananananana puree) smoothie
DINNER - 1 hotdog, 1 chicken breast (HAHA! TAKE THAT BIRDS!), 1 burger, no soda, lots of fruit!
SNACK 3 - pretzels
EXERCISE:
full nights sleep.
DAYS-WITHOUT-SODA-POP-O-METER: 10 (someone offered and I refused!)
WATER GAUGE: approx. 100 oz.

Dark Horses, Underdogs, and the Only Thing That Matters
DISCLAIMER: I get pretty "religious" later on in this post. If that's not your groove and that kind of stuff offends you please skip the "GRACE" section. But, if that's not your groove and that kind of stuff doesn't offend you, read it. Maybe you will groove to it.
---
Okay, this blog is all about honesty and grace and fitness right? Well, I got all three tonight.
---
HONESTY:
Well, I have a confession to make.
I'm an avid fan of American Idol, and for grins and giggles, I plan on auditioning.
But, whats really exciting is that my guy that I've been rooting for all season won! Which sucks, cause now he has to make crappy music.
Seriously, if I were a betting man, I'd bet against my guy: Kris Allen.
So, Kris, if you're reading, thanks for letting all the underdogs know we can win.
---
GRACE:
Youth group went really well tonight. 1) I ate better then I normally do, not great but better. 2) We had a fun discussion... well, it was less of a discussion and more of a diatribe from me to the youth (and some adults).
I'll share with all of you what I shared with the group tonight:
Nothing else in the world matters, except for how much God loves you.
In 10 days you're going to forget what outfit you wore today that you spent 2 hours picking out.
In 10 weeks you're going to forget about that petty fight you had with your ex best friend.
In 10 months you're going to forget what you didn't pay attention to in class.
In 10 years you're going to forget most of the kids you went to highschool with.
In 10 decades you're going to be forgotten.
Ultimately, nothing we do really matters.
Depressing right?
No.
Why?
Because God has loved you before you were knit in your mother's womb. The intimacy you share with God, whether or not you want to, is the only thing that matters.
---
FITNESS:
DIET:
BREAKFAST - low fat yogurt and Kashi
SNACK 1 - Fiber one granola bar
SNACK 2 - Homemade Tommy Snacks
LUNCH - Vegetarian Sandwich with a few chips, and a bowl of minestrone. (I had an iced soy chai latte to drink)
DINNER - one cheeseburger, two helpings of baked beans, three helpings of fruit salad.
DESSERT - one s'more brownie.
SNACK 3 - pretzels
EXERCISE:
approx. 2 mile walk.
DAYS-WITHOUT-SODA-POP-O-METER: 9
WATER GAUGE: approx. 110 oz.

Semesters Over, Parties, Cookies, and Star Gazing (Or, When Birds Attack, Again.)
Today was awesome.
Since, my goal isn't just to be fit, but to have a lifestyle of fitness (including, physical, financial, spiritual, emotional, et ceteral) I'm going to update you on some areas of my fitness in my life.
But, lets back track.
This is mostly a blog on physical fitness, but seeing as how we're physical beings, physical fitness touches upon everything. So, that's what I meant up above.
---
Today started shaky. I'm in poor financial shape, and well, that can start any day in a shaky way. But, lets not dwell on the past.
My last class period was awesome!!! I absolutely love my creative writing teacher! I'm gonna miss her this summer, of course, we're hanging out in two weeks, so I guess I won't miss her that much.
---
Work. Boring. Except I got attacked by a bird, four times.
ATTACK OF THE BIRDS COUNT: 6 bird attacks.
I've decided that birds are vicious and vile creatures, full of hatred and rage.
The other day I was watching two ducks in the Fox River. They were doing one of two things. Either they were mating or one was trying to murder the other.
Since, mating and murder are so closely related, for example they both are brought to us by the letter "M", they could've been doing both.
One duck was mounting the other duck, which led me to believe it was mating, if you catch my drift.
The mounting duck, or the alpha duck, lets call him Conan the Duck Conqueror, was taking his bill and shoving the other duck's head, lets call that duck: Willy, underwater trying to drown it.
This is why I'm confused whether if it was mating or murder. What do you think? Lovin' in the water? Murder on the riverside? Or, simply a bad date?
Either way, in the past week I've been attacked six times by red-breasted blackbirds, and I saw ducks trying to do something or other to each other.
That is why all birds are vicious and vile creatures, full of hatred and rage.
---
After work I took a very long walk that ended with some star gazing.
I'm canceling my walk tomorrow, and I'm going to do it again.
You should join me.
---
DIET:
BREAKFAST - cookies, brownies, and something wonderful made of peanut butter.
LUNCH - Tuna Sandwich with Chicken and Wild Rice Soup (the soup wasn't as healthy and wonderful as it sounds. It was a creamy soup, not a brothy soup.)
SNACK 1 - Lemon bar.
DINNER - Roast Beef with cream cheese sandwich
SNACK 2- Soy Chai Latte, and a couple of sips of Arcedium's artics.
EXERCISE:
approx. 4 mile walk.
DAYS-WITHOUT-SODA-POP-O-METER: 8
WATER GAUGE: approx. 60 oz.

Geriatric Jazz
I was hanging tough with some friends tonight. They're all fantastic jazz musicians and invited a bunch of guys from their jazz combo to show up and play.
They did.
It was awesome.
There were a couple of high school kids who played bass, one was like 14, and they were awesome.
But, the stand out for the night was a man pushing 90 years old. A couple of years ago, several years into his retirement, he decided he wanted to learn how to play a clarinet.
He joined this community college jazz combo and started playing with a bunch of 20 somethings and high school students. It was quite the treat. They were grooving so hard tonight.
Except for the old man.
He sucked.
But, he played along with the combo as best he could. He stared at the music so hard that you would think he was trying to burn it up with his eyes. He'd set his clarinet down and let the young guys get real funky. Then, they'd look at him, nod him in, and he'd scramble with his old man hands to grab his clarinet and then he'd squeak and squawk along.
So, the combo would play something smooth and groovy. Getting into a real jam. They'd sound like real pros.
The leader would nod in the elder gentleman, don't forget he has been following the music like a mad man, and then you'd get the squeakiest and squawkiest solo you've ever heard.
---
I'm that old man.
Symbolically.
I feel like I live in this world of real pros, leading healthy life styles, working out daily, doing yoga, eating fruits and vegetables, drinking water, smiling big bright shiny smiles, and occasionally these pros have the grace to let me in to squeak and squawk a little bit.
They'll run and yoga, eat healthily, make wise decisions, have self control in the kitchen. Real pros.
Then, they nod me in.
I take walks and do crunches, think about eating healthily, make half-wise decisions, have some self control. Squeaking and squawking.
---
DIET:
BREAKFAST - banananananana and some of my trademark homemade trail-mix.
LUNCH - Half of a tuna sandwich, half of a ham and cheddar sandwich.
SNACK 1 - A whole roast beef sandwich, with cream cheese... YIKES!
DINNER - A mandarin chicken salad from Wendy's. I used very little dressing. I'm not one to chat about textures of food from fast food joints, but the texture was real bad. The taste wasn't horrible.
SNACK 2- Pretzels, and then some.
SNACK 3 - Two small Italian sandwiches on the sweetest bread you've ever tasted.
EXERCISE:
3 sets of pushups.
Set 1: 10 p.u.
Set 2: 5 p.u.
Set 3: 3 p.u.

Mom - [mah-m] noun. definition: the enemy
My mom is clearly out to sabotage me. She make such good food. Brownies, some sort of cheesy sweet bread (and you all know how much I love cheese), Italian food... yikes-a-do!
---
I lied. There are no pictures tonight of my crazy mustache. Which I figured out was less of a handlebar mustache and more of a fumanchu... or however you spell it.
I do promise there'll be pictures soon though.
---
I shaved my beard because beards make a face look fatter.
Lie #1.
I look way pudgier without my beard. Should've waited a few more weeks.
---
DIET:
BREAKFAST - yogurt and Kashi
LUNCH - A brownie and some of my Tommy Snacks (homemade trail-mix, kind of like Scooby Snacks but less hash.)
DINNER - Two wraps (they were not whole tortillas, one was a turkey and cheddar wrap, one was a roast beef and mozzarella wrap), half a pound of coleslaw. You'll all learn about my deep love for slaw.
SNACK 1- Popcorn and lemonade
SNACK 2 - Some of my mom's crazy good sweet cheesy bread, some noodles, another Tommy Snack Pack.
EXERCISE:
Night off for a whole nights worth of comfortable sleep.
DAYS-WITHOUT-SODA-POP-O-METER: 6
WATER GAUGE: approx. 50 oz.

Good Books, Handlebar Mustaches, and Cheese
Today was such a nice day. I feel about ten pounds lighter. For two reasons: I read all day and I now, for a very limited time only (till about tomorrow when I update again) have a handlebar mustache.
I love, love, love, shaving off beards and playing around with my facial hair. I've done plain mustaches before, muttonchops, fu man chus, you think of it, I've done it. This is my first handlebar mustache, and I'm really freaking excited.
I'll leave you with that. Hopefully, there'll be pictures tomorrow.

SNACK 1- A medium Artic, Arcedium's (the coffee shop where I work) version of Starbuck's frappacino, with caramel, soy, and aztec chocolate (Mexican chocolate infused with cinnamon)... in case you're wondering it runs about 200 calories... YIKES!
SNACK 2 - Half of a mozarella roll with pruchetto and basil, Italian bread, and some Eden cheese. (I don't actually think that much cheese is a healthy snack choice... but it's just so damn good. I love a really good cheese. Just like I love a really good coffee. I'm sort of a food elitist. When I turn 21 I'll probably add fancy beers and wines to that list.)
EXERCISE:
3 sets of -
10 crunches
3 leglifts
10 push-ups
DAYS-WITHOUT-SODA-POP-O-METER: 5
WATER GAUGE: approx. 90 oz.
---
Thanks for the help with the slishy-sloshy belly. Today wasn't so bad. I need to pace myself with the drinking of water. I don't need to consume 120 oz. in one sitting. I can do it over the course of a day.

Heart Full Of Hope And A Pocket Full Of Dreams (or, When Birds Attack)
I was attacked by a bird today. Three times. Apparently, I'm not the only person who will fight for a meal.
I work at a cafe in St. Charles, right off of the Fox River. Well, the Fox River is a dirty, dirty, dirty river. So, there are many bugs. And there are many birds to eat the many bugs. Thus is the circle of life.
On the way from my car to the front door, I was attacked by a bird. Twice. The bugs were out, and I walked underneath the tree where the bird lives, it took flight, aimed itself at me, and tried to attack. Luckily, I'm much smarted then a red-breasted blackbird, and I ducked out of the way. Sorry, no pun intended. Then, it came back for more. I outsmarted the rocket bird again, and ducked twice. At that point, I ran to the door.
Six hours later.
I'm walking from the front door of work to my car. I'm pretty sure that the bird had been waiting for this very moment. It launched itself at me again. And I dodged it again.
Stupid bird.
---
I made some snacks today. While I was waiting to pick up my little sister from her job at Jewel-Osco I did some grocery shopping.
Tommy's Sexy Shopping List:
-Kashi Granola
-Low Fat Strawberry Yogurt
-Pretzels
-Unsalted Roasted Almonds
-Raisins
-Dried Bananananananananananananas
-Peapods and Carrots
I made a trail mix with everything but the yogurt, kashi, and veggies.
---
DIET:
BREAKFAST - flaxseed peanutbutter bar
LUNCH - Veggie Sanwhich (Fresh Mozzarella, Basil Pesto, Tomato)
SNACK - The trail mix I made, Kashi Granola with Strawberry Yogurt
DINNER - Didn't happen
SNACK 2 - Half of a Portillo's burger... it was on the counter and begging me... no, no, no... it was screaming at me to eat it.
OTHER THINGS I PUT IN MY MOUTH AND CONSUMED - small, soy blueberry latte
EXERCISE:
1 full night of sleep
DAYS-WITHOUT-SODA-POP-O-METER: 4
WATER GAUGE: approx. 60 oz.
---
I need to get my water intake up. But it makes my tummy all slishy-sloshy. Do you have any remedies for that?

Fromage
So, I didn't eat great today. Not horribly either. Just not great.
But, we'll get to that in just a few.
---
Today was a nice relaxing day. I went to class and listened to more readings (did one myself) and after class hung out with my teacher a bit. She's pretty awesome. We're going to visit her church together sometime! Anyways, after that, I cashed my tax refund and bought some groceries!
Tomorrow, after work, I plan on making little snack packs for myself. Pretzels, unsalted almonds, unsweetened chocolate chips, and raisins! I figure, instead of always having to purchase food on the go, where there are few healthy options, I can make food to go. So, that's tomorrow's project.
---
I hope you noticed some changes. I made some layout changes, color changes, and the such. My hope is that this blog will be a little more appealing to the eye. Do you like? What are your suggestions? Different colors? Different layout? Let me know what you think.
Also, everybody should be able to make comments now. If you are still unable to make comments, email me at tommy.welty@gmail.com
---
DIET:
BREAKFAST - a bowl of low fat cinnamon cereal. The box said it was high in fiber and low in calories. I mostly think it was high in crap and low in taste. Won't be making that mistake again. I'll stick to oatmeal and fruit.
LUNCH - Cheese Pizza. This is where I was a bad boy. But, normally when I get a piece of pizza from my favorite pizza place, next to one of my favorite coffee shops, I get sausage pizza with lots of extra salt, cheese, red peppers, and I love the grease. Today, I soaked up as much grease as possible, went with plain pizza, and skipped all the extra toppings.
SNACK 1- Soy Chai Latte.
SNACK 2- Two bites of my friends spinach and ricotta cheese pizza. It was like a lasagna on a crust.
DINNER - Turkey and Grave. With a few bites of my mom's left over cheesy broccoli.
EXERCISE:
Hour Long Walk (Approx. 3 miles)
DAYS-WITHOUT-SODA-POP-O-METER: 3
WATER GAUGE: approx. 60 oz.

I'm About 12 Hours Late Today
Well, yesterday I intentionally didn't post. You'll notice that all my posts normally happen around 2am. Apparently, sleep is very pivitol to health. I was very exhausted yesterday (I always am on Wednesdays, work and youth group are tiring). So, I hung out with a friend and crashed on his couch for a couple of hours, and then went home to sleep for a few more hours.
When I went home I was going to post something. But, well, decided that it could wait till today. So, here is yesterday's post.

Today Felt Like A Good Day
I feel like I did good today. Which is nice, because lately, in most areas of my life, I don't feel like I've done good.
I'm going to be entirely honest from this point on. I may sound a bit mopey, so if that is not your style... mine either, skip ahead to the diet and exercise, Days-without-soda-pop-o-meter/water gauge.
---
Life sucks when you've been introspective. Lets agree on that, now. I don't know about you, but if I take a quick look inside, well, normally I don't like what I see. I'm a bit of an airhead, kind of lazy, self absorbed, fat, sleep deprived, frustrated, lonely, all of those fun things. I don't feel great most days. Since, probably January, very few days have felt like good days. Mostly, because I've had time to think about my life and what I'm doing with it.
I don't know.
Am I the only person who ever feels that way? Please, tell me I'm not. Seriously, that would be tremendous of you, to let me know that you're in this game of life with me.
Anyways, today felt like a good day. I think my body is really responding to the last couple of days of watching what I eat, and minimal exercise. My body kind of really likes it.
Walking to class today, I felt like a million dollars. I felt like I looked good (which, mostly I never do, which explains this whole "Get Fit Tommy" campagin). I was prepared for class. It was a decent temperature. I had a good breakfast. So, that was good.
Then, class was really good. People read stories they had written this semester.
Then, I went to work. Also, good.
Then, I hung out with friends. Good.
So, today, I felt like I did good.
---
DIET:
BREAKFAST - Bananananananananana (Gwen Stefanie! Strike two!), and a whole grain bagel.
LUNCH - A mini-burger from the cafeteria, with no cheese or toppings, and entirely not worth the dollar I spent on it.
DINNER - Chicken Barley Soup, a roast beef fajita (not that great), a small handful of chips.
SNACK - Yogurt Parfait with granola, blueberries and strawberries.
MIDNIGHT SNACK - Banananananananananananana
EXERCISE:
-3 sets of 10 Crunches, 3 leg lifts
- 5 pushups, just to see if I can still do 'em... I can. I'll be adding several sets of those tomorrow night.
DAYS-WITHOUT-SODA-POP-O-METER: 1
WATER GAUGE: 110 oz.

Why Didn't Anybody Ever Tell Me Vending Machines Were Stocked With Mostly Unhealthy Foods
No, seriously. I've never really noticed or cared before, but it sure does making snack time difficult when you're on a tight budget.
I was at school today, taking the last test of the semester, and I figured a bit of a snack would be helpful to calm some nerves and easy that growling of the beast within. My stomach always makes strange noises, hungry or not. But these noises were kind of "feed me" noises. So, I went to the vending machine hoping to find something that wouldn't be so horrible. I stood there for about 20 minutes contemplating. There was nothing. I thought maybe there would be a granola bar or something, not that those are very healthy, but they're healthy enough. But, no. There was almost nothing.
I moved on to the next vending machine.
Nothing.
Now I'm in a desperate state. My stomach is about to revolt on me and stage a mutiny. I don't know exactly what that would look like, but she was clearly getting pissed. So, I scanned row A, then row B, and so forth. Finally, with little to no hope left I scanned row E. There they were, multigrain baked chips. YAY! I spent the $.50 I needed to, and got little to nothing from them.
But, it led me to realize how hard this is.
One commenter a few days ago (Hey! Sean!) asked why our culture made it so hard to be healthy. Then, today I was discussing food options with a cook friend of mine, and it came down to expenses again.
Eating is becoming very costly, unless you like Go-gurt! and other fake foods. I normally do. But, things need to change.
---
DIET:
BREAKFAST 1: Yogurt with granola (quickly becoming a favorite dish)
BREAKFAST 2 (No, lunch): Bagel with peanut butter.
SNACK: Multigrain baked chips
DINNER: Spaghetti with meatballs.
DESSERT: 6 Tootsi Rolls
DESSERT 2: Mozzarella rolls with basil and pruschetto, Eden cheese, french bread.
EXERCISE:
3 sets:
- 10 crunches
- 3 leglifts
NEW FEELINGS:
Trying not to throw up DESSERT 2 during EXERCISE.
---
New Challenges:
I'm giving up soda pop. So, starting tomorrow (I would've started today, but I've already failed) I'm going to post how many days I've gone without pop. I'll keep this post going for 30 days. If I drink a soda, I start back at zero. My goal is to make 30 days by June 10th.
I'll along with how many days without pop I've gone, I'm going to keep track of how many ounces of water I drank that day. A doctor I used to work for told me that people need to drink half their weight in ounces of water everyday. That means I need to drink about 120 ounces of water each day.
